Parenting in the 21st century is not easy. Compared to past generations, the youth today deal with mental health issues that were foreign to us growing up. These can be so bewilderingly complex that trying to find answers oftentimes leaves us helpless and hopeless.
For example, what do you do when your young adult is so anxious that she can’t even leave the house? What do you say when your son suddenly refuses to go to school and talks back at you? How do you reach your angry teenager who chats constantly with his online friends but has shut you out? What do you do with your millennial kid who plays video games all night, refuses to work, and sleeps all day?
At MINDMOM, we recognize the important role that mothers play in the life of their child, as well as the unique challenges they face in trying to fulfill this role. By learning important principles and applying practical solutions, you will help your child overcome his/her mental health struggles and grow into happy and well-adjusted adults. This is a question that we think we know the answer to based on what our own mothers modeled, what other people have said or what society and culture dictate. However, sometimes our perception of this role could be incomplete or flawed. For instance, we might have been taught that we do everything for our children regardless of the cost to us. In this course, we will tackle questions on when to push and when to pull back, and the extent of our responsibility to our children. Topics will include the concept of “good-enough mothering,” how to set healthy boundaries with our children to reduce conflict, encourage independence and prevent compassion fatigue, and how to prepare ourselves for empty nesting.
A crucial part of mothering is educating ourselves about our children. This important course will help you understand the psychosocial development of humans over a lifespan – what is normal behavior and what it not and help yourself adjust to the needs of your child. This course will also cover common mental health disorders and their treatment, which might include therapy and medication, and other approaches. Knowing your child’s love language and using compassionate communication will help you communicate with your child more effectively. Teaching kids important values will also be discussed.
This course takes a closer look at your parenting style as a mother and how this informs your mothering. Also, understanding your family of origin, personality and early life experiences will provide insight into your child-rearing philosophy. Special focus will be given to attachment styles as well as effective parenting approaches. We will also discuss your own hurts, habits and hangups that may be preventing you from becoming the mother you hope to be.
There is a saying that you can’t pour out of an empty cup. In this course, we will discuss practical tips and self-care strategies to help you replenish your cup so that you can fill your child’s without guilt or resentment. You will be encouraged by other mothers who will be sharing their own experiences of motherhood. Other topics will focus on special challenges that non-traditional mothers (single moms, adoptive moms, OFW moms, moms in a chaotic relationship, etc.) might be facing.
It helped me realized how important to always make our mother feel loved and valued.
