Understanding Mental Health Coaching Basics

Course Overview

This introductory course covers the fundamentals of coaching as it pertains to mental health. Topics include the definition of coaching, types of coaching, how coaching differs from counseling, the role of the mental health coach (privileges and limitations) and basic traits, habits, characteristics and practices that make a successful MHC.

This course also tackles ethical issues in coaching including disclosures, confidentiality, dual relationships and boundaries; and self-care techniques necessary in the helping profession. In addition, this course provides an overview of crisis intervention including assessment of suicidality, trauma, domestic violence, COVID fatigue, psychosocial issues, grief and loss. Referral protocols will also be discussed.

Module 2

Developing Mental Health Coaching Skills

Course Overview

This course builds on the foundational knowledge from Module 1, diving deeper into practical coaching skills. Topics include active listening, motivational interviewing, goal setting frameworks, and evidence-based coaching methodologies.

Students will learn advanced communication techniques, how to build therapeutic rapport, and strategies for facilitating behavior change. The course also covers documentation practices, session structuring, and tools for measuring coaching outcomes and client progress.

Module 3

Special Considerations In Coaching

Course Overview

This course looks into specific mental or behavioral issues that the participants are likely to encounter in their practice. An overview of common mental disorders including depression, anxiety and eating disorders will be discussed. Medication, as well as other treatment modalities will also be covered.

Other important topics in this course include addiction (alcohol, drugs, pornography, video gaming, etc.) and the incorporation of spirituality as an element for change. Another important topic is Filipino psychology and its impact on mental health in the Philippines.

Module 4

Practicum

Course Overview

Participants will be given an opportunity to integrate theory with practice as they apply what they learn in real-life scenarios and situations under the guidance of a trained professional. As first responders, they will be able to practice their assessment, communication and problem-solving skills on real people.

Students will reflect on their experiences by writing a three-page guided reaction paper that they will share in a dyad or with a group. Throughout the training, participants are encouraged to think critically, ask questions and share insight.
